Matin Fest event has been held twice at Matinkylä, an urban area of Espoo. First event took place in 2014 and I participated in it as a part of a group of graffiti artists led by Support Association for Urban Cultures. Based on this project Leiskuva Inc. and Support Association for Urban Cultures started planning a commission for near by underpass in 2015. Espoo hasn't showed much support for graffiti phenomena during the last two decades but thanks to many active parties, individuals, companies and whatnot, pieces fell in their right place. City of Espoo finally gave green light for this project.
Planning begun at March 2015, the final timetable was confirmed during the summer of 2015. The idea was to paint the underpass solely by local artists, but due to many obstacles we decided to took another approach. So finally the group consisted of seven artist, and only three of them were originally from Espoo, rest of the crew was from southern parts of Finland. Five out of seven were from Raw Deal collective.
The actual painting process took little over a week to complete. Cleaning of the tunnel took one day, fixing all the broken lamps and such another day. City of Espoo took care of those. We used one day for spreading the primer paint for the walls and four days for the actual artwork. Finally the city technicians spread a protective coating over the painting.
If you want to know where this underpass is exactly located, here’s a Google Map link.
